A Hermes handbag with the name Kelly

No doubt, the cherry on the handbag cake is the Hermes handbag called Kelly (after Grace). No matter your style or taste, there will always be place for a Kelly bag in any woman’s handbag collection.

Like Isabelle (Kate Hudson) so accurately says in the film Le Divorce, where the Kelly Hermes handbag plays a big part and she’s reprimanded by her lover (who gave her the bag) for using it all the time: “But it’s so practical!”

I have to take her word on that, because I can’t tell from personal experience. One day, maybe, I will – watch this space for updates! There are only a few bags made, by hand and by one master craftsman, at Hermes every year. There is a waiting list, of course, but it’s supposed to be closed. So your best option to actually get one is through Ebay (unless you do like Isabelle in the film – get a rich French lover with the right connections in the Hermes handbag department).

Expect to pay at least 8000 euro for it – if you manage to win the bid. Even a well-worn second hand Hermes handbag might go for more than 5000 euro.

That’s a lot of money.

Having said that, this is an investment. Not that there’s anything wrong with diamonds, but I’d much rather invest in something I could wear every day and that only get prettier well-worn. Besides, if I ever have grand daughters I know they’ll be thrilled to inherit a Hermes handbag! I live in Greece, where parents and grandparents spend a fortune filling up their daughters and grand daughters’ dowry chest with hand embroidered table clothes, sheets and pillow cases. Tell me, if you were a young woman, about to get married, what would you rather find in your dowry chest: a hand embroidered pillow case or a handmade Hermes handbag?

Hmm…I start feeling that I’m practicing on the speech I’ll have to give my husband when that day comes that I can actually afford a Kelly bag.

So I might as well go on: As Isabelle in Le Divorce shows – this bag goes with everything! She wears it to nightclubs, to lunches, to classic concerts and family dinners. She wears it with a jeans jacket and a white fluffy hippy-skirt, she wears it with a black knitted jacket, she wears it with the white trouser suit and she wears it with a black shirt and white blouse.

Actually, this is the first film, at least that I know off, that has a handbag in one of the major roles. Another reason to put the Kelly bag on your wish list! By the way, the film is a wonderful warm story, not only about a divorce, but also about friendship and love between sisters. A feel-good film, worth watching – especially Naomi Watts (who plays Roxanne, the sister who gets divorced) does a lasting impression. Click on the image if you want to buy this DVD from amazon.
