Do you believe in angels? Living your fabulous life means knowing that you are not alone! I’m convinced all of us have guardian angels, some kind of private body guards, if you want. Or call it helpful spirits – someone flying around like an invisible Supermen, making sure that you get help when you most need it. It doesn’t really matter what you call it – but for sure it is fabulous that ‘someone’ is there for you.

One summer day I was returning from town on the highway. It was a beautiful warm and sunny day, there was hardly any traffic and I was alone in the car. As often happens when the road is very familiar, my mind was drifting and I didn’t pay any attention to my driving. Suddenly I feel a hand on my shoulder. Just a light touch, but enough to “wake me up”. I realized how fast I was going and slowed down the speed. Just in time – as I’m getting into a curve where the inner lane of the road, where I was driving, was blocked. In the outer lane a Mercedes is coming in hazardous speed. If I hadn’t “woken up” and slowed down I might have driven into either the road block or the Mercedes. As it was now nothing happened – it just made me wonder!

One story that has stuck with me is that of Berenice McCrae from Moira in Northern Ireland, that I read about in British Good Housekeeping in 2001. I’ve kept that interview with her in my “miracle file” ever since. It sounds like more than one guardian angel was active this evening!

On Wednesday nights Berenice (who then was 57 years old) usually went to visit her parents, but that particular freezing cold Wednesday night in February for some reason she was at home. Suddenly there is a banging on the door and as she opens there’s a stranger who tells her that he had driven past the lake at the bottom of her garden and that he’d seen the lights of a car in the water. Berenice calls the police and then rushes down to the lake. The car lights of the stranger’s car illuminates the lake and about 400 yards out she sees the body of a woman floating in the water, her face up. Berenice shouts to the man that they have to get her out, but he replies that he can’t swim. So she throws herself into the water.“I was terrified. I was in my mid-fifties, overweight and not at all fit, but I just knew I had to do it,” Berenice told the magazine.

Berenice saved that woman from drowning. Afterwards she said that what happened made her think deeply about her life. She had never been particularly spiritual, but started wondering why she’d been at home that night and how come she got the courage and strength to do something she’d never normally be able to do.

The belief in your own guardian angel was strong in ancient Judaism, probably influenced by old Persian religions. The guardian angel was supposed to be the link between you and God and would speak to God on your behalf. In catholic and Greek-orthodox church there is a strong belief in the saints protecting you. Here in Greece every town and village has its own protective saint. Also different professions have their own saints. It’s very common to carry a small gold or silver icon with the picture of your special saint. And in every car, truck and bus you’ll find a cross or an icon or both to protect the driver from accidents.
