Finding Time to Exercise

"Finding time to exercise doesn't take a miracle"

Not finding time to exercise is one of the most common excuses for not doing it. And honestly, it's not a really good one, either. You always manage to find time for the things that are important. Exercise is essential to good health, and here's how you'll find time for it:

  • First of all, find an exercise that you'd love to do. Then you don't need exercise motivation - it'll more or less come by itself.
  • Find the time of the day that really will work for you. The thing is, committing to exercise on a time of the day when you usually lack energy is like trying to get into a dress that is too tight. If you’re a morning person it’s unrealistic to believe that you’ll actually leave the house to go to the gym at eight in the afternoon – even if that’s when you have the time. Likewise, if you have problems getting out of bed in the morning it’s probably not the best idea to commit yourself to go for a run or a swim before breakfast. I’m not saying that you can’t introduce new habits or break old, bad habits (for years I started my day lying in bed, reading newspapers, drinking coffee and smoking - now I start with a run or meditation), but the time that works for your friend might not work for you.
  • Integrate exercise in your life: Walk or run to or from work - you can get off the bus a stop or five before. Is there a swimming pool or gym close to your job where you can train at lunch time? When you drive your kid to paint class/football/ballet – could you take dance lessons, do tai chi or play squash with another mum before picking him or her up? Put an exercise bike in front of the telly and cycle when you watch your favorite soap.
  • Decide on which days and what hour you'll do your workout, write it down in your diary and re-schedule if something comes up. Stick to it!
  • Get used to moving also when it's not a workout session: Walk the stairs, walk over to your friend's place or to the pub, put on some great music and dance for a few minutes, help a friend in her garden, take a weekend in the mountains and enjoy long walks...
