Moving to Ireland and becoming a star...

Dear Stella,
First let me say, I have never written to you or anyone else about myself. So I am trying something new. I found your site and it seems amazing. I love all the articles.
Now on to my problem. I am a 25 year old, voluptuous, world traveling, champagne tasting, adventure searching woman, trapped in a 45 year old, house choir bearing, wife and mother, living paycheck to paycheck.
My lifelong dream is to move from the U.S. to Ireland and become a world famous recording artist. I dream of a farm with cattle, sheep and horses. I long to breath in the crisp morning air of Ireland while enjoying a warm cup of Irish coffee.
How do I make my dreams come true or how do I give them up? That is my question. I am at the point where something has to give. This is all I think about and it is so depressing because I am no closer to realizing these dreams today than I was when I was 15 and began having them.
Nearly Hopeless.

Dear Nearly Hopeless,

The biggest mistake many of us do is to not treat our dreams seriously, either because we believe they’re so far off from anything obtainable or because we’re afraid to commit to them - what if this is not what you really wanted, after all?

Another thing is that sometimes our goals seem so high – or we unconsciously have set them that high - that they seem impossible to reach.

The very first thing you need to do is to bring parts of your dream into your life right here, right now! (And I mean as soon as you’ve finished reading this!) You need to see that your dreams can come alive.

  • Sign up for riding lessons (and bring husband and kids along!) You don’t need to wait until you get to Ireland to learn how to ride.

  • Find out if there is an Irish club near you. Can you take Irish dance lessons? Join an Irish choir?

  • Find the website of the Irish farmer’s association and start reading about what’s going on. This will at one point be your reality, you know!

  • Find an Irish forum or chat room, somewhere you can get to know Irish people, to learn more about life in Ireland.

  • Read Irish papers on the net.

  • Start reading and learning about farming. See if there are farms nearby where you live that you can visit to learn more about life on a farm, farm administrating etc.

  • Unless you haven’t done this yet: Start planning a family holidays in Ireland, renting a house in a country side (or do a home exchange).

  • Do you have any girlfriends who also have a secret dream about becoming a star? Can you get together and make a band?

  • Take lessons and practice towards becoming a performing artist.

  • Sit down and write music!

  • Do a style makeover that better suit the champagne drinking, adventure seeking you.

  • ..and put some champagne in the fridge.

OK, that was only the beginning!

Here comes the serious stuff: First of all, you need to take a good, close look at each dream:

Is standing on stage in front of thousands of people your thrill? Is it to be a part of the top music world, knowing everybody? Is it travelling the world in style? Is it knowing that thousands of people around the world listen to the song you wrote? Is it the money or the music?

Maybe you decide that getting a job as a music journalist or in a record studio or with the world tour crew of another famous artist will give you the same kick. Maybe you find out that the main thing isn't to get world famous, but to get out of that paycheck to paycheck living and get a job that is more in touch with the adventurous, glamorous inner you?

And what about living in Ireland?

Is your family willing to take the big plunch? Do you want to become a farmer, too, or simply live on a farm? Could you, at least for a start, settle with a holiday home in Ireland?

Once you have set your goal you need to plan how to get there step by step. Barbara Sher explains exactly how to do this easily and beautifully in her book Wishcraft.

And remember – you might not end where you set off to go! You might do some great discoveries along the road. Have a great time on your journey!

    My kids are a mess

    Dear Stella,

My teenage sons are a total mess.

They kick off their stinky shoes and leave them under the living room table, drop their school books, gadgets and CD’s everywhere and never put a dirty plate into the dishwasher. Their dad is even worse. How can I have a fabulous home when I’m surrounded by men who don’t care?
    Desperate Working Wife

    Dear Desperate,
Believe me, they DO care. Everyone, even the most sloppy men you can imagine deep down really prefer a neat, tidy home. You need to show them who’s the boss and set the standard. Don’t accept any of the kids’ (or hubby’s!) mess in common areas, like kitchen and living room – tell them to put it into their rooms NOW, or, if they’re not at home – throw it into their room, but don’t bother about put it into place - that’s their job. Read more about keeping a home clean. When they have friends around, find an excuse to expel them from common areas (for instance, you need to work on the computer..eh..read the new articles on Your Fabulous Life..) and into their rooms. Even the most cool teenager might tidy his or her room on the prospect that a friend will come over.Teenagers should be able to grab the prospect of Feng Shui - explain that they’ll have more money and honey if chi, energy gets a chance to move around – and that you need to keep it tidy for that to happen.

    I hate my body!

    Dear Stella,
    I hate my fat body.
    What to do?

    The fat potato coach

What kind of statement is that? If you didn’t have a body, you wouldn’t even be alive! Imagine you had a car that had taken you from Arendal to Alger to Afghanistan - would you say you hated it?
Read about the secrets to permanent weight loss. And for a start at least, begin treating your body with some respect! Smooth your skin with a luxurious moisturizer, feed your body with something it really appreciates and that will give it loads of energy (after all, you don’t put wine and chocolate on the tank of your car and expect it to run!), and move it – just like a car parked in a garage too long your body will start to rust if you don’t use it!
You’ll soon find that hate turns to love!
